Other than the seal on the piston what can really break in a calliper? Should I order a new one or would mine be fixable?

As long as it isn't leaking brake fluid from the seal the and the piston moves in and out, it should work fine. I've seen some REALLY messed up brakes, and the calipers just keep on truckin.

^ agreed.

BTW, you can rent the piston depression tools at Autozone for a 50 dollar deposit, then get your money back when you're done. By far the easiest way to do it...

I dunno my "ghetto" version worked quite well for me. Assess, Adapt, Overcome. I've been making do so long that having the luxury of the proper tool would probably give me brainlock.

I'd be worried about what the face of that piston looks like. If its been grinding on the back of the rotor for a while, those two dimples might be shaved off and you won't be ABLE to turn the piston back in...

Who needs rear brakes anyway?

Take a look for yourselves.

The rotor in the back is completely shot:

Then I found this part on the ground in my driveway...I don't know what it is exactly, it seems to be the remnants of the inner brake pad:

And you can kind of see in this picture but the caliper piston is completely extended onto the rotor and there is no pad back there...

Is that the inner brake pad I'm seeing? Will my caliper be ok or do you think it got damaged since the inner pad broke off?

Rest assured I will not be driving the car until I get this all fixed.

Thanks

Hmm that does worry me, but I stopped driving it just as the inner pad came off so I doubt it has had time to eat away at that much of the calliper, we will see. I'll update the thread once I get in there.

Hey guys,

So my parts arrived today and I started taking things apart. Take a look at the calliper and lmk what you think:

As you can see it had just started eating away at the piston and the two holes for the tool are still there. It looks like it just shaved off enough to make it all nice and shiny.

Now for the question. I was able to rotate the piston with some needle nose pliers but it doesnt seem to be compressing at all...Do you need to apply compressing force aswell as spin it or is it threaded in a way that spinning alone makes it compress? If so how many turns are we talking here?

Thanks
