Default noob needs help with oil getting to coils?????

hey guys just bought 00 1.8t quattro...guy i bought it from said it needed a valve cover gasket...second day i drive it a lil while then shut off...go back out to drive again 20 min later...it wouldnt start...long story short guy said that bc v.c.g. was bad there was oil getting to where coils connect to spark plugs...i pulled all 4 out and they had oil on the tips of the coils..dryed out and then it started fine...well i changed the v.c.g. next day, then today i check coilpacks for oil just to make sure..and theres still oil down there...havent had the no start problem again but still oil there...is there any other way oil could be getting to where the coils meet the spark plugs??? please help..im psyched about the car jus worried i got a big problem that i just inherited...thanks

Did you change the middle (valley) gasket around the spark plug holes?

Did you clean all of the surfaces properly before you put on the new gasket? Did you torque it down properly? If you did those correctly then take it back apart and use some Permatex Ultra Black RTV to help seal it. You shouldn't need it though.

you know what...i cleaned the surfaces but didnt have a torque wrench so jus played it by ear...but went out and got a new torque wrench yesterday....so today when i checked it again i actually loosened all the v.c. bolts and re-tightened them using the torque wrench to about 7-8 ft lbs...please tell me that thats the only way for oil to get down in those holes, is through the valve cover gasket....(middle) im freaking out thinking its a really bad problem...

how did you torque them? i work on tractor trailer engines and when i do those big *** valve covers like on 60 series detroits diesels i start in the middle and work my way twords the front and back and then going back over the entire valve cover 2 or 3 times just to make sure. hopefully your problem clears up!

yea i torqued them starting with the middle bolt in the middle 3...then the one in the middle towards the back...then middle front...then on the outer i started back left...front right...middle left...middle right...front left...back right...i checked again today and i dont have any leaks under the car as i did when i first tightened w/o torque wrench...and i also checked coil packs and doesnt look like any oil leaked so far...im just very curious if there is any other way oil can get down there besides through the middle valve cover gasket...

If it does you got bigger problems than a gasket lol
