Rattling when shifting
I have a 2000 A4 1.8 that is manual. I have noticed recently that when starting from a dead stop in first that there is a rattling noise occurring when letting off the clutch and trying to accelerate. The rattling will happen again when going from 2nd to 3rd. 4th and 5th i do not hear the rattling. I have tried to let off the clutch slower and to pay attention to the gas pedal a bit more attentively and sometimes the rattling will not be there. I have thought about maybe the type of gas I am using is causing it but i really do not have a clue. Any ideas?
The rumbling is now continuing into 4th gear as well and is getting louder. I changed the gas and is definitely not getting better. I have read in a few posts that it could be a hole in an exhaust pipe but still not sure on the sound. Any ideas at all out there?
If it is an exhaust leak you will hear it all the time, even when the car is sitting at idle.
Does it sound like its coming from the motor or under the car near the clutch and is it more of a clunk as you engage the clutch?

It is definitely not happening when idling but is starting to happen in reverse as well. Cannot tellif noise is coming from clutch or center of car. Any ideas on how to test this without paying mechanic prices?
