Default Spare key/key programming

Ok heres the deal. I got my 2001 A4 about 2 months back. When I got the car I only got 1 key, its the switchblade key with a fob. The key works in the drivers door, ignition, trunk, etc. But the buttons dont work, and yes I tried new batteries lol. I don't have a VAGCOM and I dont know anyone who does. I want to get another key anyway to have a spare. I saw this one on ebay (link at bottom) and its a valet key for $15, I can have my friend cut it for free (he works at a hardware store). Now 2 questions...

1. Will this key work with my car? If not can you provide me with a link with one that will.
2. Can I do the 1 key in door 1 key in ignition method of programming my original keyfob with a valet key?

Thanks for all the insight guys!

Don't think you need to program anything but a switchblade - the coding is for programming the buttons to sync with the alarm. I'm surprised your buddy can cut that key at a hardware store though - it requires a special cut technique that a standard cutter can't perform.

Well he said he can cut any key. I'm guessing I'll bring it to him and he will quickly change his mind haha. How much would it be to get the valet cut at a dealership? Once I get it cut I can do the 1 key in door and 1 key in ignition method to program the key fob I have now right?

Call a few dealers near you and see what they're asking. I got a key with fob for $125 at a dealer and they programmed it free of charge (normally $60), doing the spare key in the ignition and fob key in the door. It took less than 5 minutes

I might just do that if it's that cheap. I was under the impression that its over $250 all said and done. Maybe I can get a local dealership to hook me up with a good price like you got.

You don't need 2 keys to reprogram the key fob. I did it with 1. It's very cold outside so I'll look in the manual, which is in the car outside in the cold, in the morning when I wake up and post the instructions for you

If you can get that other key cut, go right ahead. It would only be able to open the doors and trunk. It won't start the car without being programmed. It's good to have a spare key handy. I locked mine in at the gas station earlier today and luckily I had my spare on me

So here's what I found in the owners manual. This is for a 06 A4 but I hope it works for you too.

Resetting the remote control

If the vehicle is locked, open the driver's door with the mechanical key in the remote control.

Press the unlock button on the remote control

Insert the key into the ignition lock and turn it to position 2 to turn the ignition on (don't turn the car on)

Turn the key back to position 1 to turn the ignition off again

Pull the key out of the ignition lock

Press either the lock or the unlock button to complete the reset sequence

Tried this tonight, no luck . I guess it doesn't work for B5's. Appreciate the help though!

Bummer. I was hoping it would have worked. Try calling Audi and tell the represesentative that you lost your manual
