While I was doing my VCG I found out the last person who had the top cover off put it back on wrong and it cut into the belt.

I definitely would.. How many miles are on that belt/tensioner?

 

About 30K miles. I'm looking for a complete kit now, any suggestions?

 

What else was done along with the belt and tensioner at that time? You're obviously gonna need a new belt, and you can't reuse the tensioner so that's out.

You can get pretty complete and reasonably priced t-belt kits from FCP Groton and Blauparts.com. I've used both in the past and the parts are very good quality.

 

As far as I know just the belt and tensioner, I was thinking water pump and thermostat also. The car has 177K on it.

 

Yeah definitely a good idea at that mileage. Both of those kits include a new belt, tensioner, water pump, t-stat, cam seals, pulleys, rollers, all kinds of fun ****. Only thing you might not get is coolant, which can be had separately from the dealer. It's one of those things that you don't really need to shop around for.

 

Agreed with the above. You've gotten only half way through the timing service interval but if you're replacing the belt, do it all to avoid duplication of labor. Additionally, the last tech who was in there was careless or a dumbass if they couldn't get the cover on right so you may want to play it safe and not trust the rest of their work.
