if his wg shaft is stuck open then clamping the pressure line would not do anything.

You should be able to move the heat shield and move the shaft by hand to see what it feels like. (WG shaft. Not the compressor shaft.)

Yes stick your mit in there and feel the shaft....no pun intended.
it shoud be broken where its threaded on the end...if its broken of course.

I had a chance to get a better look. Got the turbo out and saw this:


So the arm snapped, and the reason for that I belive is because the wastegate flapper inside was binding when trying to close causing stress on the arm. I don't know if there is supposed to be a clip or bushing where the flapper mounts to the arm, but there was a lot of play in it and the reason for binding. So I too the turbo to a semi/freight repair garage and the guy welded the arm on and gave me a C clip for free




You can see where the C clip is installed here:


Now the wastegate opens and shuts smoothly without binding.
I don't know how long this turbo has been out of commision, but I'd say it's been a long time because there is virtually no shaft play, it spins freely, and the blades are in near perfect shape. None are chewed up. Can't wait to get this sob in. Hopefuly the weld will hold up.

 

Thats a new one. Dont think i have seen a actuator rod snap before. Still cant believe how many bad A4 wastegates there are. You just about never see one on a transverse turbo. If the weld for some reason doesnt hold, im sure there are people with blown turbos that would sell you the wastegate.

 

Yeah... I'm wondering if there is anything I can do to insure that weld before I put the turbo back in.

dont forget to check you oil lines make sure theres no build up of crud.

I cant vouch for the weld (pretty ugly) but it should be stronger than the stock peice if its solid

 

Just try breaking it with your hands. If you can apply a decent amount of pressure w/o it breaking or bending, you should be fine. That weld looks plenty strong for what its doing unless there is no penetration that i cant see

So the turbo is back in and working properly. 5-8 psi woo hoo! It's certainly more lively and I don't have to think twice before pulling into traffic Can't wait to get it chipped!

Nah I just had that problem for 2 months and noon knew what it was finally i went to replace the turbo and saw it as you did...turbo was in remarkably good shape so I just took the actuator off the used one I bought....of corse 10kmiles later it turned into an aluminium blender
