$$$$$$$$$$$$ is my answer

I had the money for a newer model, but I like the look of the b5 and the fact that it's the smallest and lightest. I almost went with a newer style simply because of the resale value would be a little better, but I found mine with very low miles and for a great price. I actually saw my car for sale a week or two before I bought it - and i've been checking out b6's the entire time (still hated the rear end), I really hesitated but something kept telling me it was the car for me.. so I went to check it out one day and loved it.

You're lucky! Was it stock when you bought it from him?
Should've asked him to include some ecodes that he could send once he gets to Germany. [8D]

For me it was simple. I really love the B5 body style, and on top of that I got a loaded 99 2.8qm for $5k in excellent condition inside and out. Couldn't pass it up. I was looking for a 540i, but when this car popped up at that price, there was no way I was going to pass on it, and I've loved it since day one.
My purchase was actually an impules buy. I really wasn't looking for a car, but I was tired of driving the only POS in the family. Just a month before I bought it I attended a family 4th of July party and realized I had the crappiest and oldest car there... a 1988 Honda accord with a primer rear quarters. At the time my "newer" vehicle looked much nicer but my brother was driving it because he was having repairs done to his vehicle... so I really looked like the low life there.
Then I saw it... parked in the parking lot of the local Wal-Mart with a for sale sign in it. Admittingly at the time I didn't really know anything about Audi but that it shared a lot of design and parts from VW (which I was very familiar with). I wrote down the particulars and ran home to do my research, right here in fact. From what I read a A4 B5 quattro sport 1.8t manual shift car was pretty desireable, and the asking price was about3 grand below KBB because of the milage. Some times I regret it, but today I don't. Nothing like being the only car in the passing lane durning a snow storm....

FasterA4ThanUrs, it's funny how at first I only wanted the sedan but now, everytime I see a clean Avant, I would be drooling all over it. In my opinion, Avants are unique yet it is still sporty. Once it's lowered with a set of bigger aftermarket wheels, that thing would be hot.
Anyway, I am sure we all made the right decision buying the B5's. I know I am glad, with the community that we have between the Audi drivers. No doubt I am a proud B5 driver.
Sometimes I find it funny how I actually ended up buying the B5 since I was looking at other cars too. My other choices consisted of SUV's, couple of coupes, and other sedans. Even when I was at the dealership, I was actually looking at some B6's and B7's.
Oh yeah, not to mention I think the B5's are the most rare out of all the Audi models.

i wasn't rly a german car person b4 i got the a4. i had a civicand i was luving the gas mileage it provided lol. then one day i thought to myself, i need more power and a d16 engine just won't cut it without doing alot of work. then one day i totalled my civic. one ofthe saddest days of my life but as they say, you must close old doors b4 opening new ones. well i gues that's wut happened. my friend's dad is a dealer and goes to auctions 2 a week so i tagged along with a pocket full of cash. then when i was at Manheim auction, i saw a black on black b5 a4 1.8t and i feel in luv. we drive it around and it felt ok. it only had 75k on it and it went for about 9k and i was daym. i only had 6 to spend lol. so we kept looking and we bid on every single a4 we saw. i got so desperate i was looking at 4motion passats. still no luck though. then my baby just came outa heaven. it glided towards the build with upmost grace and there was a cute girl driving it too so i was like i have to buy this one and i prayed as i was standing there. all i had to do was take one look at the interior and check to see if there was grey smoke from the exhaust and we started bidding. so as we came to the 5k mark i looked at the other guy with my fierce sexy brown eyes with the message, "that is mine sukka". and he stopped bidding when i called 5.5k. ya that's why i chose the b5 and that's how i got it lol. i'm sure that was a very interesting short story for you all.
For me german cars have always been the top line. 2 Years ago I was driving a Mazda MX6, 1988, and I saved up some money because I was tired of it, and got a 99.5 A4, Qtr 2.8, with automatic trans. I fell in love with the car from the moment I sat inside. So I drove it for like 6 months, and one day me & my friends decided to go racing, and that was probably the worst day of my life, because I raced some dodge neon, and I smoked him, but by the end of the sreet there was a wall and a 90 degree turn, I couldn't stop and hit the wall and totaled my car, very sad, So i bought a honda civic because I didn't have much $$$, but I drove it for 3 months, then sold it and borrowed money from my parents and bought my 99.5 A4, 1.8T 5 spd! I knew the only car I would get is Audi, so that's my story. Btw I don't knowif you guys noticed this, but on my previous Audi, and on this one when I drive the car fast, and it's in the high rmp, and when I press the brake suddenly just as I'm accelerating the car doesn't start to stop right away, untill the rpm start going down?! I don't know why, but it's what caused me to total my previous Audi, I didn't know that, I you don't know it too, try it...
