As a final solution to the "At my Wit's End" post.

My engine is being replaced, with a used 1.8T with 45000 miles on it. My engine had 48500 on it, so I gain a few miles.

Warranty guy came out to inspect the car to figure out what exactly they are paying for, and on top of the blown head gasket, failed thermostat, misfiring in #1 and #2, and a cracked cylinder head, he found a deep scratch in cylinder #2.

Warranty will pay $5000 for the used motor or I had the option of buying a new 1.8T out of pocket for "alot more" as it was put to me. It was an easy decision.

So, I will be using the rental coverage from my insurance and should have the car next friday.

I suppose that's cheaper for them than paying to rebuild it. Of course, you have to hope that your "new" motor doesn't have issues too. Here's hoping that everything goes smoothly with it. It couldn't really be worse than the one you had, I guess.

 

might as well replace the "wear with age" components before it goes in to save you a lot more time/money later. do the t-belt, t-belt tensioner and water pump. its much easier to do before you drop it in.

 

Thats a good point, but at the same time I would hope that the "new" engine has had a good inspection before it was "certified" to be installed into a car. And all those things would have been replaced if need be. Then again, maybe I am wearing rose colored glasses.

How much can I expect for a t-belt job? And at what mileage can I expect to take care of that?

 

well in the manuals it recommends the service at 105k, but most people do it for a 80k service if it makes it that long. i just had mine replaced with 68k on the clock,but then again the car is 7 years old. age is a factor. i got it done at the dealer,and,at a 20% discount it cost $968. before tax it was quoted at $1009 + tax.

even if the engine is inspected and certified, if those parts are still in good condition (id assume they would be at that low mileage) theyre still half way through their expected life span. id see how much your shop wants to do it before they put the engine in. its likely worthwhile

 

Just talked to the service guy, said my car was all back together and he is going to drive it tomorrow morning to make sure its good to go. If something else pops up, I am going to rip my hair out.

Should have it back tomorrow.
