Question Good or Bad with Big Turbo

Hey guy,

I've been thinking about saving up for a big turbo kit, maybe one of the Eliminator kits (with Revo software and injectors.) I was reading this thread about removing vacuum lines (found here) but I didn't know how this would affect, if at all, a big turbo setup.

I'm not concerned with emission, because I'm in FL or the resale of the car. I'm only concerned with whether this would cause more wear and tear on the car or not. What do you think?

The elim. kits are a popular choice and there's many paths to take. Removing vacuum lines is not new, as long as its done right. If your worried about wear and tear, maybe you should just leave it as it is. Wear and tear will come either way. Depends on your powerband, and how hard you push your 1.8T. With a BT kit, as you know will need the supporting mods to compensate for the extra ponies. Your off to a good start just added some brakes, TIP, and a upgraded clutch. I see you have a euro side mount intercooler, what are the specs on power it can handle? Maybe pick up a FMIC. As long as you take your time and do things right, it WILL be a reliable DD. What were you thinking as far as hp goals?

Well, I know there will be wear and tear on the car regardless...I was just wondering if this would cause any addition stress on the motor, or if it would be helpfull to it.

As far as how much power, realistically I would like to see somewhere around 300hp. I was thinking about this kit but honestly, I wasn't too sure what the difference between the GT71R and the GTRS turbos were (besides one being rated 50hp more)

p.s. as far as the side intercooler, I'm not too sure what it is capable of. It is the one from Neuspeed. I sent them an email about it the other day actually, and am waiting on a response as we speak.

I didnt take the time to read the DIY but it sounds like all the lines are being re-routed to reduce unnecessary lag and control of the vac on the BV. So no, there wont be additonal wear-n-tear. The 71r is a great eliminator for DD. Im sure you saw Greg's #'s with some fine tuning of course, but the #'s can be closely achievable. Do you have a DSMIC? Thats all I get from your "euro side mount". Either way you'll need a bigger fridge for a BT. I'd get the ER cac.

The GTRS is the eliminator version of the 28rs, (2860). Arguably the most reliable set up so far for B6's. The GT71r is the elim. version of the 2871r. Larger turbine wheel than the RS resulting in slightly more lag but much better top end. Both have the same 28 series housing.

Skip going with a larger SMIC, you wont see all that much of a gain over the stock SMIC for the amount of money you would be spending. Better off going with a FMIC like the ER SPORT or Comp, if you dont want anyone to see it you can order it in a anodized black. The ER Comp was designed for the Elim kit so it will bolt up right to it. We offer the ER kits at a discounted price.

euro_2nr, thanks for the info. I think I may go with the GTRS setup, just because I thnk I would rather have less lag than a couple extra ponies. By "euro side mount" I did mean DSMIC. I will fix the sig to make it a lil clearer (it is actually the one from Neuspeed. It was on the car when I bought it.) So do you think that setup would be enough to handle what I'm looking for or would I still need to go with a FMIC?

Just a chip will make a big difference. I mean, it doesn't turn you into the fastest car on the road but it makes the car a lot more fun to drive.

Well if you're looking for a chip then that will also add stress to the turbo since you'll be doubling the boost. Not every mod is bad. (i.e. downpipes will release back pressure and relieving the stress) You're mechanic friend sounds too uptight. Most mods will decrease some engine life, but its minimal. Cold start-n-go's and improper cool-down habits are worse.

Myst- Considering you're down in Florida I'd highly suggest a FMIC. Even with a K03s you're probably heat soaking already. An ER Comp will provide plenty of space for cool down . Check out Mike's link.
