Angry knocking from the top back (vvt)

hi i have an

audi A4 B6 2003
alt engine code
2.0 litre
20 valve

it as been making a knocking noise for some time now but i was putting off doing it as it ment taking the hole front of the car to bits but last weekend the water pump went and i thought i might as well get stuck in and fix an oil leak from the cam area and the knocking

when i start the engine from cold after a good run it makes the knocking noise for about 2-5 seconds (as if somthing needs oil)
if i switch it off straight after the knocking stops when i go to start it next time (however long i leave it) theres NO knocking
but if i run it up to tempreature switch it off leave it for 1-2 hours then start it again the knocking back

i have stripped it all down and have the cams out the cam chain tentioner is fine but i am thinking it is the varible valve timing unit

before i took the belt off i took the spark plugs out and turned the engine over with a rachet and the inlet cam was going round so far then jumping round the rest of the way (as if the hydraulik ring was empty). So i am thinking this is the noise i am hearing when it starts up (but faster)

i have had a look at the vvt unit on the end of the inlet cam and it seem's to have a little filter and behind that there is a bearing that is possibly ment to keep the oil in the vvt unit i am thinking the oil is running out of the vvt unit as the engine cools down

as anyone had this any help would be great

thanks Dave
