i just did my change today using mobil 1 5w-30 and the m1-301 filter

first time i ever did an oil change on my own car and i was pleasantly surprised with how easy it was, biggest pain for me was putting in the plastic skid plate under the car again haha

I use castrol sythentic recommended by alot of good mechanics. Even though audi says to use mobile. MAke sure u replace ur crush ring on ur oilpan or it could develop leaks in the near future.

crush ring? i've never heard of that before.

the only thing i could imagine it being is the washer that goes between the screw and oil pan?

Yes sir thats it. Some people have the problem of the washer warping and eventually leading to a small leak at your draining point. not a must need the first time u change ur oil but always keep an eye on it when u change it.

Sorry to dig up this old thread.

Many of you have said that putting back on the undertray is a pain. I usually leave mine off as I oil change twice per year. Apart from some minor noise silencing does it serve any other function?

Thanks

mainly its to protect the oil pan from debris and anything else that you might hit, say a curb while pulling into a parking spot.

although i dont know if this is true, ive seen a few people say they have gotten noticeably better fuel economy because of it too, but i have no clue about that

Some things the belly pan does:

Helps protect the engine bay

Helps radiator efficiency by keeping air from rolling around under the bumper

Helps with cooling by speeding up airflow under car, lowing air pressure and accelerating the air out of the engine bay

Same effect helps hold car to road at speed

Smooths airflow under car for reduced drag
