Default What tools do I need to remove CV joints

Hello,

It's 2004 A4 3.0Q auto. Both my inner CV boots are torn. I tried to replace them but need to know the following:

1. What size is the hub nut?
2. What kind of tool do I need to remove those two strange shape bolts on the inner CV joint? It looks like torx but it has so many little tooth in it.
3. Where can I get those tools?

Thanks for your help.

Found it and I'm going to answer myself...

The hub nut (axle bolt) is a 17mm HEX and the strange looking bolt is triple square. Anyone know what size of triple square do I need to remove CV joint?

Thanks.

The only bolt you need to remove is the axle bolt, once thats out you need to take off the control arms from the steering knuckle, then pop out the tie rod end. Once those are out you should have enough room to pull the axle out of the wheel hub. You thread in a slide hammer where the axle bolt goes to pull the CV joint off the shaft, or you can use a gear puller, those you can rent from any autoparts store. Don't remove any triple square bolts. The ones i think you are referring to are the 6 triple square bolts holding the shaft to the trans, you don't need to remove those unless you want to completely take the axle out of the car, you can do that if you want to though.

auditech79,

Yes, the triple square bolts I am referring to are bolts holding the shaft to the trans. I need to remove the axle completely because I need to bring it to a shop so it can be pressed.

you have to removed the entire shaft to remove the inner boots.

and theres a better technique for removing the outter joints if you have access to an air compressor and half inch impact
