Shift Point Question
All,
I need a little help. I'm looking at buying a 06 A4 sline w the auto tranny and 2.0T. The one I'm looking at has 90K on it, but seems to be very well taken care of. When I test drove it, I found that in standard drive position, the car almost instantaneously shifted from 1 to 2. The only way I could keep it in first was by shifting manually, or by putting it into sport mode.
This really concerned me, but I'm being told that the electronic tranny auto adjusts to a persons driving style. This car is driven by a young lady and so I'm thinking she never really got into the gas much....would that be a correct assumption or does it sound like there is tranny issues?? When in sport and manual shifting, it shifted smoothly.
Any feedback would be great....thank you so much!!

Is this a quattro with the real auto transmission or a FWD with the CVT?
I have a 2006 quattro auto and in normal D, 1st gear is VERY short unless I really put the gas down hard. If I don't stop all the way, sometimes it doesn't even bother to downshift to 1st (unless you push the gas pedal hard in which case, you get some serious hesitation on the kickdown). Audi service department tells me that's all normal.

Mine's a stick, so I can't say much, but a B8 quattro loaner I had did the same thing. Drove me nuts, so I found myself leaving the transmission in sport until I hit cruising speed. The sport mode shifts at points similar to what I usually do with my manual transmission.
As other stated it is normal. I think it is a fuel economy thing. In regular drive the car moved through the gears quicker. In sport you can hear the engine rev higher before it hits it's shift points. I tool around in "D" most of the time unless I know I want a quicker take off then I put it into "S".
The Tiptronic shifts so quickly up in "D" it's ridiculous, I guess to extract the highest MPG. I even re-adapted the Tiptronic, and drove with a lead foot so it could re-learn my driving style. After a few hundred miles, same result.. ridiculously short shifting.
To remedy, I either put use the Tip mode or shift with the paddles. If I'm feeling lazy I just drop it into "S"
