Default car lock/unlock going crazy.....

guys HEEEEELP!!! my 2004 Audi a3 1.9tdi has developed a serious issue over the last few days just wondering if I can find some answers on the net but so far ive had no luck what so ever, and it doesn't seem to be a common one..... okay so it all started on Monday night when I was in bed asleep and my wife noticed orange light flashing through the window and said are your car indicators on? I got up when out and my car was just going nuts, locking, unlocking, locking unlocking and so on.......... did it continually for about 15 minutes then stopped, now it keeps just randomly doing it, no patter you can be driving along and all of a sudden "lock, unlock, lock, unlock" and it goes nuts, no I know all the usual carry on with the dodgy wiper motors that leak water in onto the boot lock and cause the alarm to randomly go off but the symptoms of that don't match up to what im getting..... also once the car has stopped going nuts you can unlock/lock it with the key fob for about 3-4 times then the key stops working for about 15 minutes, how ever when you hit the lock/unlock on the key fob the interior lights come on and go off as they should however the locks do nothing, im really scratching my head here and at a loose end, hoping someone has had some experience of this and can help me out.

thanks guys, Macca

I've known faulty ignition switches that cause the doors to lock and unlock whilst driving. Have the fault codes read, this would confirm it.
