3rd gear grind

3rd gear grind
Ok here we go. This is my first post, so let me know if I'm missing any info.
Car: 2002 A4 Quattro, 3.0L, 01E 6 speed. 102k miles
Problem: Grind going into 3rd gear only (from both 2nd to 3rd and 4th to 3rd)
I noticed a grind last week while shifting into 3rd. I didn't have time to deal with it so I've just been not using 3rd gear. When the car is idling/stopped, I can move through all the gears with no trouble. As soon as I start moving though, the grind into 3rd happens, which increases in severity with speed. Once I am in 3rd gear and moving, I can go from neutral and back into 3rd with no problem.
Is that a bad synchro? I drained the fluid, and only about 1.5 quarts came out. Not good. So I fill it back up with about 2.75 quarts MT-90 and go for a drive. Trans is noticeably smoother than before, but the 3rd gear grind is still there.
Is there anything else to try before a rebuild? I've done timing belts/head gaskets/cv rebuilds/etc; is this something I could tackle myself, given the right tools?
Thanks for your help and moral support!

It's probably a bad synchro, tough luck someone probably was racing it and missed a gear and jammed it in....
When you describe going 'from neutral to 3rd it doesn't grind' i'm guessing you are double clutching, (engage clutch, take out of 3rd, release pedal, push pedal, enter into 3rd gear release pedal) and it's smooth. This allows the transmission's gears to line up and all is well. Modern cars have synchro's that do this for us, if they are bad, you get what you are describing..
