Default Performance vs All-season tires

I recently purchased a 2005.5 A4 3.2L Quattro. I have the Premium Package with 5 spoke wheels with 17" 235/45R17 94v tires. My question is , can I change the tires to get a smoother ride, although I know that I will sacrafice performance, without having to change the wheels? I live in Maine where the high performance tires are good for only a very limited time and in the cold they are brutal. If I change to regular profile tires, won't it change the diameter of the tire and therefore affect the speedometer? Can I change to 16" tires? If so how do you recalibrate the speedometer for different diameter tires? Thanks for the lesson!

You can probably find all season tires to fit the rims that it came with, however it is possible you might have to pay a little more up front, depending on what is available for the dimensions you have. I used to live in Maine so I know what you mean. I am not sure about getting a smoother ride out of all season tires vs. performance ones and I don't think your speedometer will be effected regardless of what you toss on there though, the only thing that may change is the handling, but I believe you're running AWD anyway so that shouldn't matter.

Hope this helps.
