Default Question on transmission control module

Anyone know whether or not a tip TCM can be used to control a non-tip automatic? I ask because my friend has a 96q auto non-tip with shifting problems, and has a shot at getting a tip TCM. I'm wondering whether the tip TCM would work on his non-tip car. Does the tip TCM have all the controls that a non-tip transmission needs, PLUS the tip controls, or are they two completely separate, different designs that are in no way compatible. He doesn't care about adding tiptronic to the car, he just wants to get the transmission to shift itself (currently, he has to start it with the lever pulled back to "2", and manually shift up through the gate to "D" as he accelerates). Any feedback or ideas on that?
