I have a 2001 A6 2.7T. I changed the brakes about 3K ago. They are still squeaking and very soft. It has the Lucas-Girling brakes, and I used OEM replacements rotors and pads. I have also used a small amount of brake grease on the back sides. The car brakes ok, but I know it should be breaking a lot better. Any thoughts?

How's your fluid level? When installing new brake pads, you have to compress the pistons in the calipers so that the new pads (which are presumably a lot thicker than the old, worn pads) can clear the rotor. Most of the time you need to undo the reservoir cap underhood so that the pistons compress more easily. It's possible that either you pushed some fluid out of the reservoir, and you're now low on brake fluid, or that you somehow got some air in the lines, which can be bled out. Check your fluid level first and top it off if needed - that makes a big difference if you're low. If not, it's worth it to bleed the brakes or have them bled - if you have air in the lines, you'll definitely lose braking feel.
