Default What are "cats" ?

Probably shouldn't be asking, but I'm new here and as I read some posts I've read about cats breaking up, causing powere loss... are these catalytic converters?

cats are furry little companians which are very spunky creatures. catalytic conveters are casing with a biscuit comprised of catalysts mainly platinum which breaks down exhaust emmisions. the reason they cost power loss is because once they burn out the after cat O2 sensors think think that somethings wrong with the engine since its sending too many pollutants, this cuases the computer to go into limp mode or set of the CEL

Not only that, the main reason for power loss is that the flow of the exhaust gases is blocked.
