Thing is to move slowly but never stop. I remember mudding in my 87 Mustang. Not by choice though. I was learning stick in my mustang with my dad on a dirt backroad when it started pouring. And since the road got blocked off, I had to pull a U-turn. Only way to pull it off was to go down this hill and come up on the other side. I'm surprised my car got back up the hill.

 

I never had problem in the snow in my 5.0 lx. Its all about taking it easy on the car. When you are spinning tires faster, its not helping. Go easy on it, constant throttle at low rpm is key. and i agree with vnv, if i had winch on my car, i would be going everywhere no worries!

 

winch only helps when there is something to attach it to, doesn't help in a field in the middle of no where.

 

thats why you always bring a freinds truck with you. lol

 

When you're stuck in the middle of nowhere with a winch you can still use it to get unstuck. If you bury something (like a spare tire or a log) about 3 feet under ground, far ahead of your vehicle,with your winch cable attached you can use that to pull yourself out.

 

Regarding the comment about tires, I run dedicated snow tires on my a6 and outback wagons. Where I am in NH, spring time is known as mud season and I keep the winter tires on until almost May. They are very helpful for traveling on muddy dirt roads, though I'm not sure how that would translate to the muddy field noted above.

 

My first car was an AMC Eagle sedan. There was a corn field that I would like go mudding in. It had cheap onroad tires that were tall and skinny, and I never got stuck. That car could do some amazing things.
