04-06 S4 clutch/shifting
I'm in the market so I test drove S4's yesterday. the manuals I tried all had very weak clutches. i expected a racing clutch that would be stiff and a short throw shifter.. instead it was soft and unprecise and shifting was pretty soft. is a racing clutch/short throw shifter replacement pretty much standard with these cars? the way they were, i'd rather just buy an 05-06 tip even though despite the power, is kind of boring to drive. thoughts and comments appreciated
I'm not impressed with the clutch/shifting on the B6 S4 either. I bought my 04' Tip car begrudgingly thinking I really wanted a stick like my other cars have, but every time I drive a stick B6 S4 it clunks through the gears, the shifts are long and imprecise, and the clutch grabs at the top of it's travel. The first couple I figured... okay, hammered cars, but then this past Saturday I drove a babied 04' with 38k on the clock, and it was just as bad as the other two I drove.
I guess I'm just going to have to learn to love my Tip. I was going to sell it and buy a stick, but unless I experience something better than what I have thus far it ain't gonna happen.

well those clutches like all oem clutches are full plate all the way around so they give the impression of being an easy clutch. The clutch is just the part that comes in contact with the true part that matters, the pressure plate, those take all the abuse. Anywho oldpeople need to drive these cars too on the autobahn so yes they are fairly easy to depress but they are rated for high torque and horsepower numbers and thats all that matters
