Default some newbie questions

I just got my first european car, coming from the minitruckin world, where its all about slow and low.

So I've got some n00b questions, and will probably add more to this post as I think of them.

1) I read in the FAQ that BOVs are no good. My car has two of them (it doesn't make the pssshhh sound though) It has a dyno sheet of 388 whp, so do you think that these BOVs are actually helping, and not hurting the performance?

2) the BOVs are adjustable to "hard" or "soft" what's the difference? Where should they be at?

3) how much PSI can the stock block take on these? This car will spike around 18-20 psi, which seems rediculously high to me. I'm trying to find out exactly what has been done to this car to seeif the engine is okay at such PSIs.

Check out my new member post to see some pics of the car.

Thanks for bearing with me, as I'm a complete newbie when it comes to anything boosted.

Are you really sure that they are BOV's and not just upgraded DV's, what is the name on them? Also people have held boost at 24psi on our cars so your plenty fine, cause we have forged motors. Your pics are SICK by the way!

From the looks of his engine pics he has BOV's, you can see the little horn where they blow atmosphere. A BOV does somewhat weaken the engine because it doesn't recirculate boost back through the intake, it just dumps it, it also makes the car run rich. I'd get em changed out imo. I have a friend with HKS SSQ's with the recirc kit, you can hear the sound pretty well if thats what ur looking for.

I'd bet that car is chipped too, most of the controls (if you have a multi-program chip) are controlled through the cruise control stalk. It would probably be better for someone that actually has a chipped s4 to explain it to you.

I looked at your pics you have a good lookin car. I was wondering is that a strut bar running by your battery box?
Also watch out for those guages on your A-pillar because there is anairbag behind there and if you get in a wreck those things might try and killyour passenger or something. It also looks like the previous owner added quite a few goodies to your car. nice ride good luck.

Thanks guys!

audi ops. The name on them is TurboSmart. They do have the "horns" on them, which made me think BOV. Is a DV the same thing as a bypass valve?

Superdug, yeah, that's a strut bar and I actually thought it was a factory piece. I guess that they aren't? I pulled the little plastic cover off around it and that bar is in there pretty good. Which is why I thought it was factory.

If I can't find out what has been done to the car, I may end up visiting the shop that I am pretty sure did the work on this and ask them if they can give me some insight. The more I look at it, the more I see...
brakes (rotors)
exhaust
now the strut bar
etc.

Whats the difference between stage 1, 2, 3...? Is there like a set "guideline" that will determine what a car is at? or is there a place on this site that describes the difference?

Thanks again guys

Here's a pic of the valve.
Also I threw in two of the strut bar.
