Okay so I am new to this forum. I bought an Audi a4 its a 1999 and I love everything about the car..except it is super super slow. So I was wondering what kind of mods that arnt to expensive I could do to get a little more out of it. It has about 140 thousand miles on it and it has had the timing belt done once. I am probably going to do it again soon so I was thinking maybe some cams could get me a little more kick? I am only 16 so I don't need anything terribly quick and I am not going to supercharge this car until I am a better driver. I also want to get hids on the car..any recomendations on those? Or engine uprgrades. My clutch is about to go as well so ill be doing that soon..any advice or tips are very welcome(:

 

Get that clutch changed probably go with some good upgradable clutch maybe racing ones if you want to. Get an intake on the car ask for more help online to find the right one or go to AWE-tuning.com then upgrade the ecu i'd go with Unitronic or Apr which ever then you can do internals then turbo charge the car. But because your 16 i truly recommend to wait a while. To make the car any faster is expensive. really expensive so wait your still young

 

I'm assuming you have a V6 because of the supercharger comment. If you want power, get your practice on this car, take a driving course at a track (you will learn a lot about vehicle dynamics), then sell it and buy a boosted Audi to mod.

Why do you think your clutch is going? Does it engage really high? That's how Audi is designed. Put it in 5th at 30mph a d floor it. If it doesn't slip, it's not going to and is fine. Read the sticky up top for new owners - you'll get a crash course on these cars and will know better where to start.

 

Oh, and at that mileage and the timing only having been done once, you're overdue already. Get it done ASAP. Cams won't do anything for you - a supercharger or nitrous are the only significant power-adders you'll find for it.

 

Yeah, my dads good freind is a mechanic and he is saying the clutch does not have much longer. He is doing a magnaflow exhaust with 2.5 inch piping and no resonator..I hope the drone is not to bad I have sound deadning..secondskin to be exact..I don't want like crazy power..just tourqe mainly..so when I get on it it'll pull a bit harder..as for the timing belt..my mechanic says have it done every 90,000 miles? It was last done at 98,000 miles (not by me..guy that had it before was a complete dumbass) so I'm not sure cause I hear 60-70 thousand miles. Thanks for your replies guys! Keep them coming!

 

He's wrong about the 90k mile interval. That was what they initially called out when the cars came out but tensioner failures caused the prevailing wisdom to change to 60-65k miles to avoid those pesky bent valves and scored pistons.

 

Okay well ill get right on that then..is there any parts I can buy for the job that will hold up longer?

 

And another thing..I want to get that car running like it did off the floor. It already runs real good no knocks or ticks..but would sea foam be a good idea to clean the inside up a bit and maybe restore some lost power? I'll be replacing the plugs to cause god knows when they were last replaced.

 

FCP Groton is a very good source for your timing parts - quality stuff and great price. As for HIDs, check KrautoParts.com - Your One Stop Shop For Premium LED & HID Kits - HOME (owned by a forum member here). Great stuff - a lot of us run his HIDs and LEDs. Be sure you change the hydraulic tensioner, tensioner roller, and idler roller during the timing job - they're the most likely failures that can destroy your engine. I've used seafoam in a lot of Audis with nice results. Also, new plugs gapped to .032" and replace your vacuum lines with silicone lines. Top it off with an oil change and fresh air/cabin filters and you should have a happy car.
