Default VAGCOM Codes and Long Start

I hate to start a new thread on this but thanks to hxgaser I have a some codes to help solve this problem. Although they were not what I expected. For a refresh I only have a problem starting my 2001 A6 when the engine is warm. First thing in the morning it works perfectly.

Address 01: Engine
Controller: 3B0 907 551 BS
Component: 2.8L V6/5V G 0001
Coding: 07252
Shop #: WSC 02325
WAUEH64B21N164171 AUZ7Z0A1865676
1 Fault Found:
16534 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor B2 S1: Malfunction in Circuit
P0150 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
Readiness: 0000 0000

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Address 02: Auto Trans
Controller: 4B0 927 156 AK
Component: AG5 01V 2.8l5V USA 3132
Coding: 00002
Shop #: WSC 00000
2 Faults Found:
18147 - Tiptronic Up Switch (F189): Short to Ground
P1739 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
18141 - Tiptronic Down Switch (F189): Short to Ground
P1733 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

I had a suggestion that it was a Vapor Lock issue (EVAP Purge Valve), although VAGCOM says that it passed the readiness test and is functioning properly. Would the O2 sensor cause a long start? From my understanding it was more of a mileage related side effect. Any thoughts? As someone who is new to VAGCOM is there another test I should be looking to run within the program?

Thanks.

I should also include the repairs I've done:

AUG - Fuel Pump & Fuel Filter
SEPT - Spark Plugs & Coil Pack
NOV - Timing Belt, Serp Belt, and Water Pump
DEC - Battery & Vaccum Hoses
JAN - Fuel Pressure Regulator & Coolant Temp Sensor

Yup a bad o2 will give you crap. Here is a quick test to check the o2 sensor circuit.

Here is a long test to check the aging of the sensors.

https://www.audiforums.com/forum/sho...lock&page=2://

Here is how to replace the sensor (It is for Bank 1, but Bank 2 is pretty much the same except you remove the coolant reservoir.)

Tiptronic issue probably is not related the starting issue. I suspect your B2S1 sensor is bad. (Driverside, pre cat sensor.)

FYI, if your car has high mileage (+/- 100K) it is good idea to replace all 4.

Thanks again hxgaser. I do not have the equipment to run the first test but I did do the second and all of the sensors passed the aging test. Is there anything within the resistance readings that could also provide answers?

I did clear the ECU yesterday to see what codes will return and while the O2 sensor has not shown back up (I havent driven more than 10 minutes), a new code has appeared:

1 Fault Found:
17987 - Throttle Actuator (J338): Adaptation Not Started
P1579 - 35-00 - -

Would this have anything to do with the starting issue?

Yes definitely. That is for throttle body adaptation; however, I thought you did that... Anyways, now that you have vagcom, you can do it the proper way. Go under engine, [01] and set the measuring block to 08. Press go and wait about 2 minutes and you are done.

Strange...

If that does not work, you can run through the throttle valve control module adaptation. Under 01 engine, click press basic setting 04, then go to group 60. Run through the adaptation. If everything is okay, then it should read "ADP OK"

I did the TB Alignment. Now I have two other codes appearing:

17972 - Throttle Actuator(J338): Under-Voltage during Basic Setting P1564
17519 Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor Regulation: Bank 1: System too Lean P1111

Anyone have some thoughts on these? I also ran some tests that I found on Ross-Tech's Wiki Site:

The A/F Control Test from group [107] showed "system not ok."

The O2 Sensor Heater Test was interesting. In group [41] the two kOhm readings were .70 (B1S1) and .70 (B1S2). In group [42] the readings were .80 (B1S2 - yes it said that it was the same sensor as in group [41]) and .20 (B2S2). Should there be that big of a discrepancy in B2S2?

The Secondary Air Injection Test for group [77] and [78] were aborted.

Would these impact the starting problem?

That is odd for saying B1S2 in group 42. Maybe a glitch??? Anyways, according to the repair manual, specified value for o2 sensor resistance should be less than .9 Kohms. .8 seems high and .7 are getting there. I would consider replacing the sensors.

Also did you do the adaptation, not alignment as noted above?

That is correct. My mistake. I ran the adaptation from group [60]. No change in the starting times.

I am guessing that I will be picking up more DTC's and possibly a CEL once those O2 sensors reach 0.9 kOhms? Regardless, I do agree that this would be a wise replacement soon. It would be great to end this problem finally.

I am looking for more tests to run that could point to other areas as well. I don't want to be chasing something that isn't causing the problem. Is there a way to check the function of the CTS using VAG-COM? I've heard of these being bad from the get-go and not triggering any faults.
