Default oil temp question

I figure I would be better off asking this hear, since we share the same weather, and I figure that has an effect. I was wondering what your guys oil temp is usually at? I've never had a car that had a gauge for the oil temp before, so I am not really sure what normal would be. Mine usually is around 200ish, but last summer, I remember it getting close to 230...if not over. Oh...I live in California.

sorry for being to vague...it's a 98 a4 1.8qt. I'm doing oil changes between 3000 - 5000. I just did an oil change two weeks ago and this morning on the way to work, it was at 200 in 57 degree weather. I have 113000 miles.

it doesn't move very much.... i don't really know why the gauge can read soo high.... but after driving for a while normal opp tep should be just a feww mm above where it sits when it's cold.... i could probably find the spec but i'm too lazy..... i searched it a while ago too because i saw the same thing... my gauge would barley move and i though it was broken......
i hope this was of help......
