Window switch plug. Take it easy removing the electrical plugs, you don't need to force them and they will break.

New speaker in place. I show the mounting bracket that is not needed. You can keep for some other job later, or throw away.

Factory speaker. Not just blown but in tatters. It is a 1998 after all. My speakers are 6.5". The stock speakers were three screw, but the mounting area had a four screw mount configuration, I think that is for the Bose speakers. So the new one just screwed right in. I had to find new screws to use that were bigger than the three factory screws.

Speaker casing. Also it is hard to say if single cone would be better as my old speakers were totally blown. The rear door lowers are blown also, so I will be putting a single cone in those to get a bit more bass. These mounted without the mounting bracket. The OEM speakers have three screws. The Alpines have four screws.

Alpine SPS-610. 6.5". A few things to note, these are 2 way speakers, not single cone. Obviously an improvement to original speakers, but they are bright. My understanding is there is built in crossover in the head unit or somewhere else, so I am not sure if that effects only the door tweeters (they don't get bass), or the lower speakers also, ie the lower speakers are only being sent the mid to low ranges. Either way these have a built in crossover if being sent high to low.

Releasing window switch panel. Hole under arm rest. Gently push small screw driver up into hole. There is spring clip, you need to be on the front side of it, which will push it back and allow the panel to move up.

OEM plug. OEM speakers usually do not have positive and negative terminals marked. For my 1998 A6, 30v 2.8, the solid black wire is negative. The Alpines have a small and large clip one for neg, one for positive, so you need to get these identified before splicing the wires. This plug is thrown away later. After removing the speaker, I plugged it back in, touch the wires to a D battery. If the speaker moves up you have touched the neg to neg on the battery and pos to pos. If it moves down reverse and you should see it move up.

Door panel removed. There are other write ups on removing the door panel. It is not difficult. Do the passenger side first. Keep the window up. If it rains or you need drive you can shut the door and go. To lock car manipulate door lock cable with door shut. Remove screws on rear end and front end of panel. Release window switch and plug. Gently lift door panel. Release lock cable and other plugs. Look them closely for release method, no need to force. Clips can be on side or depress center clip. Do not break clips.

New speaker. To replace the panel connect all the plugs AND the door opening cable. Lift panel in place about an inch above final spot. Lean into panel a bit and lower down. Check to see if secure all the way around where panel meets door. If loose, lift back up and try again. May take a few times as you may have it a bit too far forward or back.
When in place, I lowered window, close door, from outside car I had to work top part back about 1/4 inch to get it to seat properly. The hit with heal of hand to get it to sit down to right spot, may need rubber mallet or rubber end of hammer. I had to tap along top of panel from from to back a few times firmly, but not banging on it. Check screw holes, if lined up then it is in place. Replace window switch panel.

In case you wanted to replace the tweeters, here is picture. I have no idea if you can find this in after market speakers.
