Buying a A4
I'm buying my first Audi. 1998 A4 2.8. I have been talking to the owner getting all the info on the car. So the question comes up how many miles are on the car. He says 210k and 100k on the motor. I ask him if he has receipts or paper work. He said no but it has the B5 engine in it. I have been reading up and as far as I see the B5 was produced in 97-01? Need a little help on how to tell or what to lol at. What motor usually comes in 98s if it isn't a B5. Or better yet what is a B5. Thanks in advance and sorry for the newbi question. I hope to be on here more offer once I buy my Audi rather it be this current one I'm looking at or a different one.

B5 refers to all A4s made between 1996 and 2001. The 1998 came with 30V 2.8 or the 1.8T. If he didn't even know what B5 meant then I doubt he would have gone through the trouble of swapping in a 2.8 for the 1.8T. I'd say if he has no receipts/paper work then you should move on.
I wouldn't be that harsh on him. Drive the car and see how it feels. Have the compression checked and see if there are any maintenace records. Also how clean the car is inside and out.
It is a lot of miles though and typically I would avoid unless it is a 1 owner and extremely well maintained.
Also personally I would go for the 1.8t over the V6. With a simple chip on the 1.8 you will be making more then the V6 does and better mpg.
