Default Buying a4

Hey guys/ladies. My mom is looking into buy a 1998 audi a4 2.8 quattro. Im helping her look for a car, and she fell in love with this one. I think she should get it too. But I wanted to ask you all a few questions. It has 97,000 miles on it but the body is in excellent condition. Mechanically i havnt checked it out yet. I have no idea about these cars and I was wondering how long these engines last, and what to look for when buying a used one? Also, is there any problems with the 98 model? Thanks for all the help!

You take care of an audi its gonna last you forever. My friend has a 93' Audi 100 with over 160.000 miles and it is still running perfect. When I drove it the car was smooth and very responsive.

Sorry about that, I not used to these forums yet. Thanks for the replies. I went and looked at it today with my mom and we started it up, it sounded fine. But, i ran my fingers in the exhaust pipe, and there was a good coat of oil in there that was pretty obvious. Is that a big problem? It doesnt sound really good thats for sure. Replies are appreciated.

Welcome to the forums PearlAudi. As with any car, the more you can find out about the cars hsitory, the better off you'll be. Do you know the previous owner? How complete is the repair history on it? You might also want to run a Carfax history on it to see if it's been in any accidents. As for the oil in the exhaust pipe, I'd definitely investigate that some more. See if you can find out if it uses much oil between changes.
