Buying A4...help?
Looking at a 1999 A4 1.8t quattro. It is silver with the sport package with a gray/silver interior. Automatic, 80K miles, mint condition not a scratch...runs great no sounds or noises. One owner, woman, not sure of the services it has had. Only wants $8,500. Is this a good deal and what should i do as soon as i get it?

Yeah thats a pretty good providing it doesn't have any pre-existing conditions...
Make sure the timing belt/water pump/etc has been changed
control arms are not worn
Do yourself a favor and take it to a mechanic to have it inspected. I wish I had, he would have found a lot of expensive problems.

Here's a quote that I seem to keep repeating....
The most obvious issues are (no matter what the mileage may be):
Diverter Valve
upper control arms
coolant sensor (not the thermostat)
Other items that may need attention in high mileage cars are:
timing belt/tensioner
all turbo line hoses for leaks
water pump
thermostat
clutch
And, of course the turbo should be considered, but that's hard to assess.
You need to realize that this is a German performance car. German performance cars require care and attention; neglect will result in serious repairs and expense. Care and attention can be defined as simply being disciplined about the schedule of maintenance and immediately dealing with a problem when it arises. You can NOT let a problem linger like you can with a Volvo or Toyota. If a problem comes up, the longer you wait to fix it, the worse it will get; it will cause other items to fail and your wallet will suffer exponentially. But if you treat your Audi with respect and care, you will be rewarded with a superior driving experience.

doing your timing belt is not a simple job, though it can be a DIY with some reading a little determination. It costs aroun 600-900 to have it done by an independent mechanic. More at the dealer. You could do it yourself for $300 or so on a weekend.

Normally the control arm will squeak or clunk if it is worn, depending on where the deterioration is (bushing or ball joint).
Until you hear something I would not be too concerned.
