I so want to go 174...and I'd be stupid enough to do it too...my car's even quiet at 130...well...besides the wind, maybe that's what's blocking the noice. But compared to my old 89' Toyota V6 pickup 4x4...it's great! I drove for about 2.5 hours in my Audi at around 95mph, could hardly tell...Drove for 6.5+ hours straight (besides one gas trip) at 90ish mph in my truck, it sounded like it wanted to die...

If i was to drive 6+ hours on the highway, should i give my little engine a break? When and how long?

Audis have excellent oiling systems, so staying in the rpms is not going to be an issue of reliability.

If you cruise down the interstate at 4k rpm, I'd do a compression test at 150,000 miles. Changing your oil is more important for longevity.

If you are at 3.5k for 6 hours, don't worry.

My only concern is whether the engine would be more efficient at a lower rpm. The lower speed would mean less internal engine resistance, but more adiabatic heat loss during compression, yet less vacuum, which equals higher head pressure, which equals higher head temp, which equals greater heat transfer, which equals lower efficiency...
...I overkill this one a bit.

The gearing is matched to the engine rather well. (except for the old vw 2.0)

I miss my 5.0 days with 2nd gear going to 80mph and putting the car in 5th and idleing through town at 25 mph. 2500 rpm at 80 mph was nice too.

In my car at 80mph I am about at 3800 RPM. I absolutely hate it. I so wish I had an extra gear to shift up to. It's just annoying to me driving at such high rpm's. I don't hear the engine over the road noise but it's just one of those things that just bothers me. I just want to say, "I know what you are talking about Jonus and I feel the same way."

Just for this reason I kind of wish I would have held out for a 2004 that I liked that had a 6th gear. I have heard of that Ottinger(however you spell it) gear extender but haven't met one person that has it.

2.8trans swap works like a charm. I had it in my old A4 with ko4 and gt28r. I actaully still have the trans to.
