Default temp guage went out

my temp guage on my 2002 a4 quattro went out the other night. it teetered back and forth like a dang tachometer then finally went to 0 and stayed there. any sugestions on fixing it or is it best left to the dealers?

Check the temp sensor. Thats usually the cause of the irratic gauge. It can be a DIY but if your under warranty and don't have time then make the dealer take care of it.

Not sure on the B6, but on a B5 it'd be the CTS (coolant temp sensor). Likely a cheap and easy r&r yourself tho (<$20)...

Theres no draining of the coolant involved. There might be a little overflow once you remove the sensor. Heres a good DIY.

Well this is slightly off the subject. Just wanted to know is it normal for the temp gauge to fluctuate. This is the first car I have ever seen do this. It will warm up and then after a while of driving it will go down to 1/3 then after a while it will go back up half way. Is this normal for these kind of cars or should I replace the sensor. I had the sensor pop out about 2 months ago (the clip somehow fell of) Is it possible that the sensor got damaged or is it comon for to fluctuate the way it does. Thanks...
