Default 1997 A6 Instrument Panel Illumination

Hi,
new owner of a 1997 A6 and I am unfamiliar with the IP Illumination. I have two problems:

1 - The Automatic Transmission PRNDL indicator does not light up when the headlights are on - is this normal or is it burned out?

2 - The odometer does not light up whether the headlights are on or not

My question is are there bulbs that are replaceable in order to make these 2 components light up or must the components themselves be replaced? Must the entire IP be replaced? How does the odometer register the correct mileage once it is replaced? I have the Ross-Tech VCDS unregistered software and would pay for the registered version if necessary to redo the odometer
Thanks in advance for any advice
Paul

The good news is you have a `97 which means you can actually buy individual components for it...unlike later models. The "PRNDL" display is a separate illuminated module, so there is no replaceable bulb. I'm not completely sure about the odometer light, but I know there are lots of serviceable bulbs within your cluster.

Good Luck!

there is a brilliant presentation on you-tube showing how to replace the centre LED screen, should be ok for anyone with average skills
