Question 1999 A6 Transmission Issues

Hi All. I'm new to the site and have a problem with my A6. To be honest, the A6 2.8 Quattro Tip is a very nice car. haven't had issues with it until I was involved in an accident. Sent the car in and it came out with a transmission problem. Now I'm not sure what to do or what to look for and need some guidance and advice. I'm no mechanic but I'm sure there are loads of peeps here with experience......

This is what I am experiencing:
  1. When I drive in Auto it seems to change fine from 1st to 2nd and then to 3rd
  2. When it changes to 4th or 5th it just over revs.
  3. When driving in Tip it changes ok between the 1st 2nd and 3rd gears but chaning to 4th and 5th just revs.
  4. Change back down to 4th and it seems to engage the gear but has not much power
  5. When doing a VAG reading I get the error: 17101 - Transmission Input Speed Sensor (G182): No Signal P0717 - 35-10 ---Intermittent
  6. I get the error only when it goes into "Limp" mode.
  7. I have checked and the ABS Speed sensor on the right front wheel seems finished. The wiring is exposed so I guess it has to be replaced.

I have been advised by Audi that the TCU has to be replaced. I think it might not be that the TCU is damaged but rather one of the sensors providing bad data. How can I test the TCU? Audi quoted me 12K for a new one. Don't have that kind of money. Somebody else said that the Clutch for the 4th and 5th gear is finished and quoted me 15K to replace it.

Has anybody experienced these problems and had them fixed? What did you find was wrong?

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated cause I don't want to lose the car and don't have that much money to replace the TCU or to have the clutch replaced and then to find that that was not the actual problem.

I would say get the speed sensor first and replace it, since it is shot anyway.
That's fairly cheap - $ 90 at Ariz Autohaus. Replace it and go from there.

Is interesting though that both of those codes are not found in the Ross-Tech Wiki.

According to this document related to 5-speed automatic trannys, a Hydraulic Control E17 is/may be the guilty party...If you can find out what that is.

Thanks guys. I am going to replace the speed sensor over the weekend if I can find one. Will then see how it goes. I'll start searching for info on the Hydraulic Control Valve as well and post back once the speed sensor has been replaced. What is amazing is that one finds posts where people have similar problems but nobody seems to post what their final solution was!!

I had a similar problem with my 98 A6 2,4q Tip.
For me it was one of the clutch plates that was worn out do to bad oil/not frequent oil changes.
So the solution was either a service on the box, or change it.
I found a used one in good condition, and got it changed.

HI Hagforce. If I may ask, what did you pay for the used box?
