Default 2001 A6 transmission

2001 A6 2.8 Quatro with 167000 miles. Sometimes when the transmission up-shifts it will not catch the next gear and the rpms will go to red line if you do not lift off the gas. When you lift off the gas, the gear catches and you can keep driving. Only happens on up-shifts, but downshifts can can be hard with a thumping sound as well. This is happening more frequently lately. Any thoughts/ideas would be appreciated.

taking a stab with this- i had a similar issue that threw a code (don't remember it was 4 yrs ago) and turned out to the brake light switch. The code was not related to the tranny but caused my issue

I would try to see if there is an oil leak on the tranny, they will shift weird like that when low on oil. My brothers old mercedes would just go to very high rpm and not shift sometimes and it would jerk the whole car once it did shift... It might be a very luttle leak that you might not be able to find so it might be a good idea to get the gasket filter and oil changed.

this sound like a transmission problem to me. and it sounds like your transmission is slipping.
there are a few things that can cause this:

your transmission is really low on fluid

if your fluid is up to level then your cars torque converter is gone or transmission

in the mean time completely stop driving the car or a expensive problem like a faulty torque converter ($2000) can cause damage to the transmission and make it even more expensive to repair. ($4000)

take a vag-com and scan the transmission for codes. if you have not changed the fluid i suggest you do it now.
