Possibly buying 2000 A6 4.2
A local dealer has a 2000 A6 4.2 w/ 58k miles on it and are asking 15600 for it. What I really want to know is what things do I need to look for on these vehicles in terms of maintanance/ future problems? I currently have a volvo 850 t-5 with 183k miles so i'm used to higher mileage cars.
I've been looking for a 4.2 or 2.7t for a while now and finally found one...
Thanks in advanced...

RE: Possibly buying 2000 A6 4.2
I just purchased an A6 4.2L and I focused mainly on the engine, and kinda took everything else lightly. I wish I had focused more on the electronics, and makeing sure everything was working. for example the radio controls in the steering wheel don't work.
I love the car and I have funm but probably could have paid less had i dinged the dealer on that stuff.
Look around on the fourm though there is a ton if info here. I have only been on for like a month.

Just went through the same process of homework and ramping up on info. From what I gleaned..be sure trans is functioing well and not leaking. Tie rods and control arms tend to wear, shouldn't be an issue if that reported mileage is accurate, but seems like you might anticipate that around 8XK miles or so. Make sure power windows are working, particularly on driver's side. Check instrument cluster information center for LEDs that are out. Make sure it isn't throwing CEL or Airbag lights. CHECK CLOSELY FOR BODYWORK and check carfax for number of owners, etc. I found a lot of cars that had been repaired when I was looking. Importantly, if you are going to run up the mileage, start anticipating and saving for the timing belt & water pump service now!
In addition for the 2.7T, seek records for oil changes, consider pressure test to check for leaks, pull a couple of the hoses to check for oil blowby/seepage, and listen closely to the turbos at idle and as they spool up. They are supposed to be fairly robust from what I've read..but I elected to go with the V8 to avoid the cost of leaky intakes or worn turbos, and the clutch that makes for the most fun with that powerplant..

With that mileage anda clean carfax, you should be fine. The engine in the 4.2 is a tank and you won't have anything to worry about. Service is pretty reasonable as well. Welcome to the forums!
