Well the biggest difference is the 07+ model which has an FSI 4.2L instead of the standard 4.2L. The 07 also uses a timing chain instead of a timing belt so it doesn't need service. The other thing is, the older the model the older the software of the MMI. The 06+ model has a interactive display for the audible parking system and an updated sound system. The 05 is also very good but may need some MMI updates at a cost to you.
STAY AWAY FROM AN 04 A8! Its the first year and there are tons of problems with it, including engine changes.

The 05 and 06 are pretty much identical, the 06 has a little more features like that parking aid screen, as well as upgraded inteior options.
The updates are usually for MMI performance problems, like there are glitches in the system when scrolling pages and things like that. You will probably notice something annoying when using the MMI that you would think there would be an update for.......and there probably is. That kinda thing.

I agree. I recently had my 05 in for service (under warranty) and they auomatically updated my MMI for NAV use. I am not sure if it effected anything else in the MMI (like music features yet) but the new selections for scrolling through the NAV Map screen is much easier to do now while in traffic.

Stay away from 04's -- lots of worries (sorry guys with 04's but it's well known). None as I am aware for the 05's on up. In 06 the grill changes to that ovalish shaped version. If you like that, look for an 06 or newer. I wasn't aware of the new 4.2 engine in the 07's. I'll have to look at those closer.
