Unfortunately there isn't anything under the ashtray. Nor is there anything in the center consol under the armrests. I'm getting a bit frustrated. So now I take to get the codes read, no plug, and car won't start.

I looked at diagrams online (don't have a real '97 to look at). Port should be slide back cover on the left of the ashtray (slides/snap straight back away from dash)...might require pulling out ashtray, first. You gotta have one somewhere.
I assume it was NOT way under the dash on left, pointing downward toward your left shin?

P.S. The Bentley shows it UNDER the ashtray in 97's....a little flush cover, with small holes on the edge to pry from.

Yeah. I def looked under that little tab under the ashtray. The was nothing there. Just a hole. I'm gonna keep looking. There is a big hole and crack in the center consol under the removable plastic liner. When I looked inside there was a cable that was cut.

Ouch! These cars are really set up to be diagnosed with OBD2...otherwise it can be expensive trial and error. Sorry, I KNOW you didn't need to read that, huh?

Ok. I was able to getthe codes. Turns out the first auto zone guy was a moron. I just took his word for it since he was looking for so long. It's under the steering wheel. I never looked because I messed my knee up. That's why I bought this car. Can't drive my Mazdaspeed 3. So here is a list of the codes.
P 0102
P 0321
P 1392
P 1507
P 0123
Man that was way harder than it had to be.
