Default 99 2.8 quattro - idling at higher rpms than usual?

my car typically idles between 500 and 800 rpm, but the last 3 or 4 days, it has been idling around 12-1300 rpms. its almost high enough that if i put it in first and let go of the clutch it won't sputter out. this can't be good???

I noticed though that it usually goes away after about a mile of driving or so. The other day i noticed it, and i drove around my neighborhood and by time i was home it was back to normal. I'm still worried though. can anyone help me figure out whats going wrong?

Seafoam the vacuum system, pour half a can of seafoam into the oil, drive 100 miles, and change the oil and filter. You may have crap somewhere in there that's causing the idle to go high (maybe the EGR). See if that cleans it out. You can also unhook the battery for an hour and then hook it back up, turn the key on (without starting the car) for 60 seconds, and let the throttle reset. This will put the car in relearn mode and may help too.

I noticed something else, when i first turn the car on SOMETIMES the engine and oil temp gauges both don't read anything. I noticed that, then revved the engine for a minute, and they eventually shot up with temps and the idling went down.
