Welcome back, I don't post as much as I used to but try to keep an eye out here.

Hehe…the "power steering gear" IS the steering rack. If the rack is leaking all you can do is pull it out and replace/fix it. When I replaced the steering rack on my dad's B5 I went the route of getting a rebuilt OEM rack from Rack Doctor, and I would do so every time. The rack is something like $250 with a core refund when you ship your old rack back to them (in the same box the new one arrived in.)

Replacing the rack is definitely on the harder side of things, many curse words escaped my mouth as I swapped it.

Haha... Thanks for the heads up! Now... I don't think the gear is "bad" in the sense that it doesn't work, and I saw a seal kit from Duralast on Autozone's website. From your experience, how hard do you think it would be to replace the seals?

Couldn't tell ya.

The $170 (just checked the actual price) it costs for a completely rebuilt rack with new seals, boots, inner tie rods, and tested with a warranty is worth never having to find out IMO.

I'll try to rebuild things where I can, but sometimes it makes sense to just have it done professionally, especially when it's a sub $300 part. Trust me, you don't want to install the rack and have the seals leak again.
