What state do you live in? If you don't want to take it to the dealer for the diagnosis, somone may be able to help you with vag com. It's diagnostic software for the laptop that can scan your transsmission control module. It's either that, or the dealer. The scanners that autozone/advance auto parts uses can't access the TCM. It's probably the gear range sensor, but audi automatic tranny's can be haunted.

Your looking at two major fixes, both of them need the VAG COM to diagnose as onepoint8tee said.
1. The TR (transmssion range) switch is faulty putting the TCM in transmission limp mode.
2. The TCM itself is toast.

Is the TCM an easly accessible electronic box? On my old Honda Accord my TCM was housed in a box on the floor under the passenger dash. I opened it up and found a burnt capacitor. I replaced the capacitor and my transmission worked great after that. Capacitor was free from my brother's guitar gear so it only cost me the time to do the soldering. Otherwise I was looking at spending $125 for a new TCM.
