Default buying a new a4

I'm looking into buying a used 96-00 A4. I would like the most powerful car that was made during these years, but I'm not too sure about the Audi vehicles. All I know of is the turbo 4, and the v6. also there was a 2 valve per cylinder motor replaced by a 5vpc. Is the more powerful V6 the way to go, or is there enough aftermarket backing to support buying a weaker turbo i4? thank you very much.

The v6 motor makes more power from the factory but with a chip the 1.8 turbo motor levels the playing field out. There arefar more tuning options out there for the 1.8T motor than the 2.8 motor so I would go with the turbo motor.

what about reliability? I have another heavily modified vehicle for fun, I just want something I can drive everyday, while still being fun as well.

1.8T's are quite reliable as long as you make sure the maintenance is kept up with, even if they are chipped. If you are looking to keep the car mostly stock I would go with the 2.8 motor just because they aren't forced induction motors so there are less expensive parts to break.
