Had same prob...Go into device manager in control panel and find an unused com port even if your cable is USB. I use Com 3 (have USB myself). Worked fine after I assigned it.

USB to serial needs a driver to convert it to serial, I prefer the serial card in the laptop its so much easier and works better than the USB port.
what cable do you have ( is it serial 9 pin ) or USB or is it serial and you dont have a serial port on your laptop like most newer laptops? if not get the serial card for your laptop and dont use coms 6 I think that's the printer
