Is that because of the independence of the speakers? I found a set of Infinity speakers that are 2 ohm, which is what I believe the stock speakers are (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Like some of the others have said, I would like to keep my stock head unit and amp and just replace the speakers.

 

Hey, If someone who's done the "rip n' replace" speaker upgrade could post the stock speaker specs (sizes/max wattage/etc), that'd be great!
I'm planning on doing the speaker (not head/amp) upgrade this weekend, but would like to order the gear before I begin to rip stuff out.

 

Well, I had a little free time this weekend so I decided to just go ahead and take the door panel off and take a look at the stock speakers (and I should of taken pictures). The 6.5" mid-range speaker is in fact 2 ohms and the 2" tweeter is 4 ohms. It looks like it would be pretty easy to replace the mid-range with the 2 ohm Infinity speaker I found at Crutchfield. I'm not having very much luck finding 2" tweeters, but I'm not sure that they would be nearly as easy to install. The only thing I am conceded about is the fact that the Infinity speakers are 2-way and not just a single woofer. Does anybody think will cause problems seeing as how I'm going to leave the stock tweeters hooked up? Thanks.

 

--Technically, the setup in the door of the car (2'' tweet/6.5'' woof) is just a 2-way speaker with it's components separated. Adding a compiled 2-way to the existing unit would just pull some of the higher-range sound out of your mid 6.5'' sub and make the door unit a 3-way speaker setup. The separation of the low and high tones is part of what gives the Bose system it's clarity, so placing the 2nd tweeter directly over the 6.5'' (as is customary with factory 2-way speakers) could cause a touch of distortion. It will however give you a lower/cleaner bass.... the choice is yours.
--I should caution though, make sure the stack holding the tweeter over the 6.5'' isn't too high for the existing speaker socket/door-cover (I wouldn't wanna see any doors get cut to pieces over a simple speaker install).

Well I'm definitely looking for lower/cleaner bass. And I found a side view of the speakers and it doesn't look like the tweeter sticks out too much.



Also, does anyone know where I could find a 6.5" 2-ohm 1-way speaker? I would rather get that if I could but I haven't had any luck finding a pair. That's why I'm going with the 2-way Infinity's.

 

I wouldnt go with 2 ways. go to your local audio shop, and see what they have. I am a HUGE fan of MBquart. They are ****** incredible. that way you would be keeping it German

 

Thanks to this forum, I was able to remove the door panel and also get rid of the terrible BOSE speakers the factory gave us. Without reading the tip on the central screw hidden behind the aluminum cap, I would have never figured it out.

NCTT: what speakers did you use? where did you get them?

 

I found some 2 ohm shallow mount Polk Audio 6.5" speakers at Crutchfield.com. About $100 for a pair incl shipping, mounting gasket, etc.

It is a 2-way (as finding pure replacements from Bose or anyone else as a 6.5woofer or single driver was difficult.) I'm not looking to make a killer sound system so I'm retaining the Concert head and 6-CD changer. Just wanted to get rid of the hive of bees that was coming from my door panel......
