Default Temp Gauge not acting normal y?

hey guys, for about a month now i have noticed that like when i drive the car it takes long time for the temp to go in the middle between the C and H and sometimes at the redlight it comes to the middle but when i drive again it goes a knotch down i was wondering what can this be from,
couple months ago it was cold outside maybe that had something to do with it but not now , so what can it be?
any ideas?

Thanks,

01, 1.8t A4

A couple things:

1 - faulty coolant temp sensor. They're known to go funky on our cars. $20 part that isn't hard to change

2 - thermostat stuck partially open - doesn't let the coolant get to temperature when you're driving

Either could be the cause. Neither part is expensive, and neither is hard to change on a 1.8T (there are DIYs for both on www.audiworld.com). Might as well flush the coolant and refill with G12/water while you're at it.
